When I first considered cloth diapering, the thought of making my own wipes seemed totally over the top. I didn’t think I’d go *that* far into the green-mama living. But I was so wrong.
Believe it or not, if you choose to cloth diaper I think making your own wipes is actually easier than using disposables.
When using disposable diapers & wipes you wrap the whole thing up in throw it in the trash, right? No sorting, no separate trash bins.
So with cloth diapers, it’s *much* easier to use cloth wipes so you can wrap them all up in a bundle and throw them all in the same dirty bin rather than having to deal with the fuss of separating the two and emptying two separate bins. They all get washed, they all come out clean – it just makes more sense.
In addition, if you’re trying to limit the chemicals that come in contact with your little one’s skin cloth is the way to go.
Typical wipes contain parabens, phthalates (fragrance), PEG’s, propylene glycol, phenoxyethanol and a variety of other chemicals you might not want to be rubbing all over your precious babe. The cholorine process is also hard on the environment and they all end up in landfills.
I’m not trying to scare you out of regular wipes but if you’re sensitive to chemicals then regular wipes probably aren’t the best for you.
There are a lot of different methods for using cloth wipes.
Some people prefer to spray the wipes with a spray bottle each time they do a change.
I prefer to pre-make mine so they’re all ready when I need them.
It’s certainly fine to just use water and if you’re short on time I’d suggest that route.
I use a mixture of water, coconut oil and tea tree oil.
This mixture is all natural, gentle on the skin and contains antimicrobial properties from the coconut & tea tree oil.
Cloth Diaper Wipe Solution:
2-3 cups warm water
1 spoonful of organic coconut oil
1 drop of tea tree oil
Combine the solution in a bowl and allow the coconut oil to melt. Simply dip the wipes in the solution, ring them out, roll or fold and place in an airtight tupperware container.
I use OsoCozy Flannel Wipes (unbleached) and end up making a batch of every few days. It only takes a few minutes and is so worth it.
Bonus: I love having these organic, soft wipes on hand for cleaning up spit up and keeping those neck rolls fresh & clean…mamas you know what I’m talking about 🙂

Do you think I could use baby oil instead of coconut oil? I know the coconut is very natural, but I already own the baby oil!
