Instructions
  1. Start by adding the lentils to a stockpot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Simmer for about 20-30 minutes or until tender, adding more water if needed to make sure the lentils are covered during cook time.
  2. Strain the lentils and return to the stockpot with ghee. Add the seasonings and stir.
  3. Split into two servings and serve over a bowl of cooked brown rice.
  4. Season with salt and pepper and garnish with fresh cilantro.

  1. Question regarding lentils used for this recipe. Is this regular brown lentils or can this be made with red or yellow lentils?

  2. This takes me home. My momma loved lentils.

Re: the missing turmeric. I used to make a tuna noodle casserole with many ingredients that my late husband loved. One night I made it and he looked up from his first bite and said,”Something’s missing.”

    It was the tuna.

    1. Love the story Tracy! My husband made curry puffs on a camping trip, the evening he planned on asking me to marry him. I guess he was a bit preoccupied, he left out the curry! They were a little bland but I said yes anyway ;).

  3. I just read your comment Tracy and this is hilarious! I’m glad you have these fun memories from your late husband and I’m sorry for your loss. I imagine it is hard this time of year; my heart goes out to you!

I’m looking for ways to use up leftover turkey from Thanksgiving. I’m looking forward to making this today with some turkey added in. Thanks! I love lentils and ideas for Indian spices.

  5. Delicious! I love all the spices! I think I’ll throw some spinach with my bowl. Does anyone have any other ideas for veggies to include to make it a more well rounded meal?

Spinach is a great idea, Summer! You may also try kale or any other favorite leafy green. Possibly some carrots as well! Let us know how it goes. 🙂

Made this dish and it was so yummy, with brown rice. I would try this with added vegetables as above. Thanks
